• Cubist Inspired Value Drawing

Students learn about the principle of art known as value and practice their shading techniques by varying the pressure of their pencils. Students examine, critique, and analyze the work of early and late Cubist painters to better understand how value functions in works of art.

  • Surrealist Inspired Digital Collage

Students practice using basic Photoshop/Photopea tools in order to create a digital version of a Surrealist collage. In their collages, students must demonstrate their understanding of the vocabulary terms juxtaposition, transformation, and dislocation.

  • Mixed Media Identity Self-Portraits

Students experiment with a variety of materials to create two Self Portraits. Each portrait represents a different part of their identity. As a class, we examine and discuss the concept of identity in art. Each final artwork is accompanied with an artist statement.

Students create Flip Books as a precursor to our Digital Animation Unit. In each Flip Book, students must demonstrate their understanding of the Squash and Stretch principle of animation. This assignment is coupled with a detailed history lesson exploring the origins of animation in art.
